The assassination of Benazir Bhutto – A dark day for judges and lawyers in Pakistan

December 27th, 2007 § Leave a Comment

The CBC reported today that Benazir Bhutto was killed this morning in an apparent suicide attack.

I can do no better than Slaw.ca’s post on the subject, which contains a number of links detailing the various ways in which the Musharraf administration has abused the bar and judiciary in Pakistan.

Benazir Bhutto represented that nation’s best hope for real democracy, and in turn, the development of a legal culture which respects the judiciary’s role in safeguarding the constitution, and the bar’s role in advancing arguments before the judiciary.

One can only hope that her loss will not deter the other from realizing the vision for which she advocated.
